The Government has received over 310 000 voter registration forms by the close of the six-week voter registration campaign, which started on June 1, 2003 and ended on July 16, 2003. The forms include new applications for registration as elector and notification of change of address by registered electors.
A spokesman for the Constitutional Affairs Bureau today (July 22) said as at July 20, the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) has validated about 193 000 forms, of which about 95 000 (i.e. 49%) are for new registration, and 98 000 (i.e. 51%) are for updating of addresses.
"In addition, since the registration deadline for inclusion in the 2002 final register on March 16, 2002, the REO has continued to receive new applications for registration and change of address," the spokesman said.
"Between March 17, 2002 and May 31, 2003, the REO has received around 8 800 applications, and a further 62 000 for updating of address records," he added.
All validated applications and change of address will be reflected in the provisional register for 2003. As required under section 32 of the Legislative Council Ordinance (Cap. 542), the Electoral Registration Officer must compile and publish the provisional register not later than August 15, 2003. The provisional register will then be made available for public inspection from August 15 to 29. Thereafter, the Electoral Registration Officer must publish the final register not later than September 25, 2003 under law.
