Transcript of SCA's standup briefing after joining signature campaign
|
The following is the transcript of a standup briefing by the Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, after joining in a signature campaign in Central this afternoon (December 15) (English portion):
Reporter: How is the Government going to resolve the issue of the public's aspirations for a timetable to be included in the political reform package?
SCA: We fully respect and appreciate the aspirations of Hong Kong people for universal suffrage and a roadmap to be determined. We have begun the work in the Commission on Strategic Development. The Chief Executive has made it clear that we intend to conclude the discussion on these aspects in the Commission by early 2007. We believe that approving the 07/08 electoral package will pave the way and lay a firmer and broader foundation for this package to bring us forward in terms of fixing and determining a universal suffrage timetable.
(Please also refer to the Chinese portion of the transcript.)
