Following is the transcript (English portion) of the media session by the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, at Government Headquarters today (October 9):
Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs: Earlier today I met with a group of Legislative Councillors. They presented to me a position paper reiterating on behalf of 23 Legislative Councillors that they support the implementation of universal suffrage for returning the Chief Executive (CE) and the Legislative Council (Legco) in 2012.
In the course of the afternoon, I met with representatives of over 20 community organisations. They presented to me more than 100,000 signatures, signifying the support of these personalities for the implementation of universal suffrage for the CE to precede that for the Legco. These organisations and individuals variously support the implementation of universal suffrage for the CE no later than in 2017, by the year 2017, or beyond the year 2017.
I have the opportunity to meet with both representatives of the Legco and of these various community organisations in the course of the afternoon. We still have one more day to go before the three-month public consultation period finishes and I would encourage different organisations and individuals to make use of this opportunity to present their views on the Green Paper on Constitutional Development before midnight tomorrow.
