The Legislative Council Hong Kong Island by-election was successfully concluded with the completion of vote-counting at 2.55 am today (December 3). Mrs Anson Chan was elected with 175,874 votes to fill the vacant seat in the legislature.
"The count was conducted smoothly. With counting decentralised to counting stations which were converted from polling stations immediately after the completion of poll, we were able to complete the counting of some 322,000 ballot papers within 4.5 hours," a Government spokesman said.
"We are grateful to the some 2,900 polling-cum-counting staff who worked diligently and professionally to ensure that the polling and counting process was completed smoothly and efficiently. We would also like to express our appreciation to the eight candidates and some 322,000 voters who exercised their voting rights in the by-election. Their participation and enthusiasm demonstrated the importance of the election to our community."
"We congratulate Mrs Chan on her election and we look forward to working closely with her and other LegCo Members on issues across the board," the spokesman added.
