In response to the announcement of Mr Raymond Tam's new appointment, the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, made the following statement today (July 17):
"During his tenure as Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Tam has made an important contribution to the work of our bureau. In particular, he has covered a full range of human rights issues, promoted the implementation of the Race Discrimination Ordinance and dealt with the amendment legislation to enable imprisoned persons to vote. In deputising for me during my absence from Hong Kong, Mr Tam also covered our overall policy portfolio as acting Director of Bureau.
"With his breadth of experience in public service, I am sure that Mr Tam will play a constructive role in his new capacity."
