SCMA's response to media on 2012 political reform package (with photo)

The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, officiated at the inauguration ceremony of the New Home Association this afternoon (June 15). Following are his remarks to the media on arrival at the event venue at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre:

Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs: The consistent position of the HKSAR Government is that, at the constitutional level of the Basic Law Annexes amendments, we have utilised all the room that we can find to come up with a proposal of formulating the Election Committee in 2012 with 1,200 members, and the Legislative Council with 70 members. We do believe that for the over 400 directly-elected District Councillors to choose from amongst themselves six Legislative Councillors will contain an adequate element of democratic progress. In the days ahead, we will make every possible effort to secure support among different political parties and independent members for the 2012 constitutional package to be passed.
