Following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Co-operation and Promotion Council:
The Chairman of the Hong Kong-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Co-operation and Promotion Council (ECCPC), Mr Charles Lee, returned to Hong Kong today (October 29) from his visit to Taipei.
Concluding his three-day visit, Mr Lee said, "During these few days, I met with some Taiwanese friends in the economic and trade and the cultural sectors, as well as representatives of the authorities responsible for the related areas. We also visited the International Design Fair of the 'International Design Alliance Congress'.
"We had a very good exchange on promoting closer economic and trade relations between Hong Kong and Taiwan. Further strengthening the economic co-operation between the two places is a co-operation area agreed under the ECCPC and the Taiwan-Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Co-operation Council (THEC) platform. I am glad that at our meetings with the senior representatives of the responsible authorities in Taiwan, we both recognised the importance of establishing a closer economic co-operation framework, and the benefits it would bring to the developments of Hong Kong and Taiwan. On this, we hope to initiate study and discussion with the Taiwanese side on the co-operation framework as soon as possible.
"In fact, the business sectors of both Hong Kong and Taiwan have expressed clear and strong wishes that the two places should enter into a closer economic co-operation framework agreement. They considered that the co-operation between the two places should be stepped up, so that Hong Kong and Taiwan could complement the strengths of each other, thereby promoting the economic integration of the region. Hong Kong and Taiwan will continue to take forward the relevant work through the ECCPC-THEC platform."
Regarding the co-operation on creative industries, Mr Lee said, "I see much room for co-operation between the two places in terms of cultural and creative exchanges. Hong Kong and Taiwan both use Chinese characters and both have rich cultural background. We can jointly build Chinese creative brands. I believe the cultural co-operation committees under the ECCPC and the THEC would actively follow this up."
