The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Patrick Nip, started his visit to Huizhou and Dongguan, cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, today (February 6). He visited Hong Kong enterprises running business in the cities and saw for himself the latest developments there. He also met with officials of the municipal governments and business representatives to exchange views on the opportunities brought about by the Bay Area development.
Upon arrival in the morning, Mr Nip visited a Hong Kong enterprise which produces glass screens in Huizhou. The enterprise, with manufacturing bases in Huizhou and Shenzhen, has become one of the world's largest manufacturers of mobile phone screens. Mr Nip chatted with enterprise representatives to gauge their views on the experience in developing business in the Mainland and on the development of the Bay Area.
He then witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the City University of Hong Kong and the Huizhou Municipal Government on enhancing co-operation in academic and scientific research, and met with the Secretary of the CPC Huizhou Municipal Committee, Mr Chen Yiwei, and the Mayor of the Huizhou Municipal Government, Mr Mai Jiaomeng, to exchange views on strengthening co-operation between Huizhou and Hong Kong.
In the afternoon, Mr Nip visited a Hong Kong enterprise specialising in textiles and knitting to learn about the business environment and developments of the industry in Huizhou.
Mr Nip departed for Dongguan in the evening to attend a seminar organised by the Dongguan City Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment and met with representatives from the business sector.
Addressing the seminar, Mr Nip pointed out that the development of the Bay Area is a key national development strategy.
"Hong Kong, being the most international city in the Bay Area, has a business-friendly environment, rule of law, economic freedom and a wealth of professional talents with global market insight. With our unique and competitive edge in traditional industries such as financial services, trading and logistics, Hong Kong can develop with other cities in the Bay Area in a mutually beneficial way and 'go global' together to expand in the international arena," Mr Nip said.
"While Hong Kong continues to leverage on our unique advantages in traditional industries, we are also determined to fully utilise the opportunities brought about by the Bay Area with a view to injecting new impetus into diversifying our economy, especially in the areas of information technology and creative industries," he said.
He also said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government would actively take forward the Bay Area Development Strategy in the future, seeking policy breakthroughs and promoting the flows of people, goods, capital and information between Hong Kong and other cities in the Bay Area. The HKSAR Government would also continue to reflect views to the relevant Mainland authorities and strive for more facilitation measures that would help Hong Kong people develop in the Mainland with a view to removing obstacles for them so that they can play to their strengths and seize the opportunities brought about by the development of the country.
