The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, today (December 9) officiated at the opening ceremony of the "Culture in Motion: A Celebration of Racial Harmony" variety show held at the Southorn Playground in Wan Chai. The Government has set up a special Race Relations Unit to organise public education programmes and to provide special support service for members of the ethnic minorities. There is a hotline for enquiries and complaints. Publicity campaigns and conduct talks and seminars are conducted to promote understanding and respect for racial equality. The Government also sponsor various non-governmental organisations and ethnic community organisations to offer direct support services to ethnic minorities. Today's ethnic cultural variety show is part of the "Culture in Motion" series initiated by the Committee on the Promotion of Racial Harmony and organised by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau to promote the value of cultural diversity and encourage inter-communal understanding. Through this programme, the Government aims to foster a stronger sense of community belonging among the ethnic minority community and a sense of pride in their own cultures and origin. It is also aimed to encourage better public understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures which, together, make up this cosmopolitan city and have contributed to its success. The "A Celebration of Racial Harmony" variety show lasted from 3pm to 6pm. It featured ethnic dance and music performances by Indian, Thai, Indonesian, Filipino, Nepalese and Pakistani entertainers. Highlights included a Thai boxing demonstration and a spectacular traditional Pakistani marriage ceremony. Apart from stage performances, exhibition booths were set up to introduce cultural artifacts, national costumes, posters and cultural exhibits of different ethnic groups in Hong Kong. Demonstrations on henna and Thai massage were also available. Ends/Sunday, December 9, 2007
