CS presents award for winning concept design of HK pavilion at 2010 Shanghai Expo |
The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, said today (April 14) that the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo would highlight the HKSAR's unlimited potential and creativity. Mr Tang was speaking at the presentation ceremony for the winners of the "World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China - Hong Kong Pavilion Concept Design Competition". "The Shanghai Expo will provide an opportunity for us to showcase Hong Kong's city charms, quality city life and to promote Hong Kong's creative industries," Mr Tang said during the prize presentation ceremony at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. The Shanghai Expo will be held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010, and will be another major international event to be hosted by China after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The HKSAR Government intends to build a Hong Kong Pavilion with distinct characteristics to highlight the theme, "Hong Kong - A City With Unlimited Potential". The Hong Kong Pavilion will be an integral part of the China Pavilion at the Expo. To tap the best creative talents of local professionals, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the Architectural Services Department launched the Hong Kong Pavilion Concept Design Competition earlier this year. The Hong Kong Institute of Architects was the sponsoring organisation. Eighty entries were received during the competition. The entries were assessed by a seven-member jury chaired by Mr Tang and comprising Mr Rocco Yim, Professor Edward Ng, Dr Allan Zeman, the Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Joshua Law, the Acting Director of Information Services, Mrs Juliana Chen, and the Director of Architectural Services, Mr Yue Chi Hang. Besides the first prize and second prize, five honourable mentions were also given to the outstanding participants. The winner, entitled "Pavilion of Infinity", has three levels. According to the designers' idea, the middle level is mostly open, transparent space. This level will provide the pavilion with a distinctive look that symbolises the infinite imagination and creativity of Hong Kong and its people. The winning design concept will be adopted as the blueprint for the detailed design and development of the Hong Kong Pavilion. Ends/Monday, April 14, 2008 |
