Forums to gather public views on Review of Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance

The Government has published the "Consultation Document on Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance" to invite public views on proposals to amend the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO).  The consultation period will end on November 30.

To widely consult the public, the Government will hold two public forums.  Details are as follows:

First Public Forum
------------------

Date: September 18 (Friday)
Time: 7pm-9pm
Venue: Auditorium, Youth Square,
238 Chai Wan Road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong

Second Public Forum
-------------------

Date: October 30 (Friday)
Time: 7pm-9pm
Venue: Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall,
72 Tai Ho Road, Tsuen Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong

Both forums will be conducted in Cantonese. Simultaneous interpretation in English will be available.

The public may register by phone (at 2810 2059/2810 2261), fax (at 2523 0565) or email (pdpo_consultation@cmab.gov.hk) to the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau from now until one day before each forum. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

The Government, with the support of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, has conducted a comprehensive review of the PDPO to examine whether its existing provisions still afford adequate protection to personal data having regard to developments, including advancement in technology, over the last decade or so.

The consultation document can be obtained from any District Offices or downloaded from the website of the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (www.cmab.gov.hk).

Ends/Wednesday, September 2, 2009
