SCMA speaks to the media (with photos)

The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, today (February 8) received from the Alliance for Constitutional Development over 1.1 million signatures by members of the public collected in a signature campaign. Following are Mr Lam's remarks to the media (English portion) after receiving the signatures at the Central Government Offices:

Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs: The HKSAR Government warmly welcomes the fact that over 1.1 million residents of Hong Kong have decided to signify their support for democratic progress in Hong Kong to be made in 2012 through this signature campaign. This result surpasses that made in 2005 in support of the 2007 and 2008 proposals. It also reflects the fact that in the course of the last two months or so, through various visits to District Councils, we have secured broad support for progress to be made in 2012. It also reflects the fact that according to opinion polls conducted by various universities, over half of the people of Hong Kong support that progress should be made in liberalising the election systems for returning the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council in 2012.

     Thank you very much.
