| USCMA visits secondary school to observe its cross-cultural learning environment (with photos) |

The Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Miss Adeline Wong, visited Pak Kau College in Tin Shui Wai this morning (March 24) to see for herself the school life and learning environment of non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students. Miss Wong first met the Principal, Professor Tam Man Kwan, and representatives of the school, and was briefed on the history and development of the school. Miss Wong noted that the school started admitting NCS students since the 2005/06 academic year and has been one of the designated schools by the Government for enhanced learning and teaching of NCS students with additional resources. The school has implemented initiatives such as split class in the teaching of Chinese, and designing its school-based Chinese Language curriculum and assessment. Miss Wong then toured around the school premises and observed a Chinese class and a Drama class. Through the Drama class, NCS students and local students study together and understand different cultures through interacting and exchanging with one another. To assist NCS students in adapting to school life, a Nepalese teacher has been employed to teach English language and History in the school. A Nepalese teacher assistant also assists in areas such as teaching, and liaison and communication with non-government organisations and parents of NCS students. Before concluding her visit, Miss Wong chatted with a group of students and listened to their views on learning and their aspirations. Miss Wong encouraged the students to help and learn from one another, treasure their experience in an environment of diverse cultures which is a valuable part of their learning, and actively participate in various extra-curricular activities.
