SCMA speaks to media after attending RTHK programme |
The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, attended an RTHK radio programme this morning (June 8). Following is the transcript of Mr Lam's remarks in response to a question from the media afterwards: Reporter: On a radio programme this morning, Emily Lau said this summer will be a summer of discontent and people will take to the streets. How do you plan to cope with that? Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs: I would say that we hope that the Hong Kong community will appreciate that on the part of the Hong Kong Government, we have made every effort to enable Hong Kong's democracy to move forward. And as opinion polls indicate, about 60% of the people of Hong Kong would like to see the Legislative Council approving this proposed package, and 20% or so would not feel able to support this package. So my reading would be that the overall sentiments in the community are that they hope the Democratic Party and their allies, other political parties will find themselves able to pass this package and create more room for political participation and democracy to move forward.
