At a ceremony to launch the publicity campaign for the 2012 Legislative Council (LegCo) Election today (July 21), the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, encouraged those who wish to pursue a career in politics to make use of the opportunity to seek nominations for standing in the LegCo Election before the nomination period closes on July 31, so that after being elected into the LegCo, they could work with the Government and the community for the better future of Hong Kong. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mrs Lam noted that the 2012 LegCo Election, in which the "one person, two votes" arrangement will be implemented, represents an important milestone in Hong Kong's democratic and constitutional development. "Elected District Councillors will stand as candidates for the newly created District Council (second) functional constituency (DC (second) FC, commonly known as the 'super DC seats') which will be returned by the second vote cast by over 3.2 million registered electors who do not belong to any of the traditional FCs," said Mrs Lam. Mrs Lam said that the slogan of the publicity campaign for the 2012 LegCo Election is "Hong Kong is Our Home. Cast Your Vote". The Government will be launching a series of activities to increase electors' awareness of the LegCo Election polling day, to encourage candidates to submit their nominations, to publicise the election arrangements and to promote a clean and fair election. She also called on all registered electors to vote in the election on September 9 to return legislators who can represent them in the LegCo. The launch ceremony was followed by a mini-concert featuring popular artistes. They joined the voting call and helped drive home the message of a fair and clean election. Other officiating guests at the launch ceremony included the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Raymond Tam; the Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr Justice Barnabas Fung Wah; the Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Joshua Law; the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan; and the Director of Broadcasting, Mr Roy Tang. Ends/Saturday, July 21, 2012
