Foreign legislature should not interfere in HKSAR affairs |
Regarding media reports on the introduction of a bill relating to Hong Kong's internal affairs by US senators, a spokesman for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government gave the following response to media enquiries today (February 17): The Basic Law ensures that under the principle of "one country, two systems", the HKSAR exercises "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy in accordance with the law. The HKSAR Government is also firmly committed to protecting the various rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong people in accordance with the Basic Law, the Hong Kong Bill of Rights Ordinance and other legislation. HKSAR's rule of law, strict law enforcement by law enforcement agencies and the independence of the Judiciary have long received high regard and recognition among the international community. The HKSAR Government found it unacceptable and expressed deep regret over foreign legislature's introduction of a bill seeking to interfere in the affairs of the HKSAR without evidence indicating that mainland authorities have enforced law across the boundary.
