The Deputy Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Howard Chan, has called on residents to give active and enthusiastic support for Hong Kong's participation in the World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China, and visit the Shanghai Expo to be held in Shanghai next year.
While attending the Individual Ticket Sales Launch Ceremony for Hong Kong Region today (June 29), Mr Chan said the Shanghai Expo to be held from May next year would be a mega event to be hosted by China.
"The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is greatly honoured to have the opportunity to take part in the event.
"The Government believes that participation in the Shanghai Expo will bring great benefits to the Country, to Shanghai and to Hong Kong in various aspects," Mr Chan said.
The Hong Kong Pavilion (HK Pavilion), located near the China Pavilion, will be under the theme "Hong Kong – a City with Unlimited Potential" to showcase the city's connectivity and creativity.
Apart from constructing the HK Pavilion, Hong Kong will also participate in the Urban Best Practices Area Exhibition under the theme "Smart Card, Smart City, Smart Life" to demonstrate the extensive use of smart cards and quality city life in Hong Kong. Hong Kong will also organise an array of events and cultural programmes to exhibit the city’s diverse culture and creative industries.
Mr Chan took the opportunity to thank the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination (Shanghai Expo Bureau) and the China Travel Service (Hong Kong) Ltd (CTS(HK)) for its support towards Hong Kong's participation in the Shanghai Expo. He looked forward to the continued co-operation with the Shanghai Expo Bureau and CTS(HK) in bringing Hong Kong to the Shanghai Expo, and bringing the Shanghai Expo to Hong Kong.
Mr Chan said the Government would step up publicity efforts proactively in the coming months. A Foundation Completion Ceremony will be held for the HK Pavilion on July 2 in Shanghai. A two-week "Exhibition on Hong Kong's Participation in Expo 2010 Shanghai China" will also be held in Shanghai to attract more visitors to the Shanghai Expo, and to visit the HK Pavilion and take part in the activities relating to Hong Kong's participation in the Expo.
The Shanghai Expo will be held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010, under the theme "Better City, Better Life". It will provide a platform for participating countries and organisations to exchange experiences and ideas on urban development and explore new approaches to eco-friendly lifestyles, working conditions and sustainable development.
The Launch Ceremony held today was co-hosted by the Shanghai Expo Bureau, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the CTS(HK). Individual tickets for the Shanghai Expo Hong Kong Region will be made available to the public through CTS(HK) from Wednesday (July 1).
